Pennsylvania to Waive Fees for Volunteers

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf has announced that volunteers who work with children will now have to pay less to get a background check through the state. They are required to clear several checks, which typically cost nearly $40. That cost will be reduced to approximately $16 after the fee waivers.

This allows volunteers—who do not necessarily have the funds to pay for their own background check—to provide childcare services while still screening out those who fail to meet the background check requirements.

Any business that uses volunteers should be aware that they are treated exactly the same as employees are under the FCRA. This means that a background check policy for volunteers that is in compliance with state and federal law must be consistently applied.
